The recent installation of a massive 2700 square foot, high definition display in Times Square afforded Toshiba Corporate a unique branding opportunity. Toshiba wanted to take full advantage of this display by creating a brand campaign that connects with the world community—beyond simply featuring Toshiba products. Screen content needed to tie into Toshiba’s corporate messaging and brand, including their tagline, “Leading Innovation.”

To ensure that the activities respect the culture and customs of each individual country and region, Toshiba Group appointed 300 employees as “Social Contributions Coordinators”. These coordinators work together with individual group employees around the world to actively promote social contribution activities to solve the challenges facing each local community.

CURRENT PROJECT: Message Architecture

The Grand America is an independent, European-style, five-diamond business/event/destination hotel located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is listed on the Gold List of the World’s Best 721 Hotels in the January 2008 issue of Condè Nast Traveler.

The Grand America, which opened in March 2001, is the most spectacular, incongruous, over-the-top addition to Salt Lake City’s skyline. It was built by Earl Holding, who grew up in Salt Lake, and whose many interests include the Sinclair Oil Corporation, the Sun Valley ski resort, and the Little America hotel chain.

Its 775 rooms and ballrooms and courtyards are spread across nearly all of a 10-acre city block formerly occupied by pawnshops and warehouses. It’s the kind of place where after you finish admiring the giant vases of flowers in the lobby, and the English woolen carpets, and how carefully the grain of the Carrara marble has been matched from panel to panel, the elevator whisks you up to the 17th floor, where a plate of fruit that can actually be eaten is waiting in your outsized room. And where after you have unpacked, and taken the hand of the Italian silk comforter on the bed, and spent 10 minutes staring appreciatively at the perfectly mortised baseboard in the bathroom, you find yourself wondering: What the hell is a place like this doing here? (From Travel & Leisure Magazine)

VIZTHINK IS GATHERING VISUAL THINKERS from all corners of the world to create the first global community dedicated to the use of visualization in all forms of learning an communication. VizThink was initially conceived by Dave Gray, Chairman of Xplane. A long time proponent of Visual Communication, Dave envisoned the creation of a global community of visual thinkers. In 2006 XPLANE expanded to Europe through a new office in Madrid, Spain. While in Europe Dave became acquainted with Rodolfo Carpintier of Digital Assets Deployment, a business incubator firm in Madrid. Through their conversations the concept of VizThink was raised and Mr. Carpintier, who has a successful history of building organizations that revolve around community, was enthused by the idea and decided to fund it.

In July of 2007, after about six months of planning, VizThink was launched…

Today VizThink operates conferences in North America and Europe, a successful workshop series featuring industry gurus and local communities in several cities, with many more in the process of organizing their first event. Jack Hadley, founder of ClarityWorx is an avid proponent of visual thinking to solve business problems and to help clarify brand messaging. He recently attended a workshop with Dave Gray and Karl Gude in Chicago where he met up with VizThink’s organizers.

VizThink Utah will hold it’s first workshop on THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 2009 at CoworkUtah in Orem. Subscribe to the VizThink Salt Lake City blogsite HERE and watch for details!

VizThink Conference in San Jose

I am currently attending the North American conference in San Jose.

Yesterday I was so impressed by the work AutoDesk is doing. As a world leader in 3D design software, Autodesk enables people to visualize, analyze, and experience their ideas before they are real. With a wide spectrum of industry-specific products, Autodesk creates best-in-class solutions designed to meet people’s unique business needs.

AutoDesk created the following visual presentation after the TED conference that recently concluded:

I just finished reading an insightful book entitled The Laws of Simplicity in which John Maeda (MIT Media professor and designer) suggests ten principles for balancing simplicity with complexity in today’s technologically choked world. Maeda’s first law is simply to REDUCE. He writes, “The process of reaching an ideal state of simplicity can be truly complex… we would choose to keep all the functionality if we could… When in doubt, just remove. But be careful of what you remove.”

From human relationships to the iPhone, when one looks thoughtfully at things of worth, more often than not, they’re things that strike a reasonable balance between relevance and irrelevance. The magic is in the distillation. Balancing simplicity with complexity in communications doesn’t mean going without. Rather, it means abandoning a perceived obligation to keep “all the functionality” at the expense of clarity.
